FAQs
What are my business deployment options? There
are many ways to implement Lean Six Sigma. It depends largely on the business and the business environment. See the self
assessment page. Some considerations include: · The current performance level · The time frame and results
expected · Level of support throughout the organization · Level of effort and available talent · Level
of resource commitment (monetary and staff) · Deployment can be organization wide or in a target area such as manufacturing.
It can be piloted by a small group within a business unit.
How quickly can we see results? The key is to identify
quick win, high value projects at the outset. These are then used in the training sessions, so you should begin to see results
with several months after the completion of black belt training.
What is a master black belt or black belt? A black
belt is a practitioner of six sigma methods and tools. They can also be called coaches, subject matter experts, etc. They
typically receive 4 weeks of intensive training over an 8-12 week period. Black Belts lead teams on projects. Typically
they work full time for the first 6-12 months.
What is a green belt, yellow belt or white belt? These are staff
who are trained less intensively than Black Belts. Green Belt training is typically 2 weeks over a 4-6 week period. Some
organizations allow green belts to run less complex projects under the guidance of a black belt. Yellow or white belts have
less training than green belts and are project team members, generally 2-3 days.
I know karate – you can’t become a
black belt that fast – can you? Unlike karate with its years of training and testing, Six Sigma compresses training into
several weeks. However, like karate, it takes years to become a true expert in any subject. It is important that new black
belts have a strong support network. Larger organizations have many black belts who can support and mentor each other. Smaller
organizations may have to look outside of the organization for support.
How profitable will the results be? The
results you get are largely dependent on the commitment of top management, the project selection, the staff selection and
the deployment strategy.
How do we make sense out of the alphabet soup? A “Google” search will yield a bewildering
array of acronyms, methods and tools. You need to build your Lean Six Sigma Plus tool set to fit your organization. It should
be lean and should produce quality results.
What will lead to the success of Lean Six Sigma Plus? You must have
the full support and commitment from the highest levels of management. There is no example of a successful Lean Six Sigma
initiative that did not have such support.
